What is the Ultimate League Championship?

updated 18 Apr 2015 7:47 AM EST

The ULC is an inter-league championship where 8 leagues compete against each other in multiple competitions using the original players accounts. The 19th hole and Where Eagles Dare were originally in another inter-league championship called the League of Leagues. Unfortunately, the LOL fell dormant due to serious health issues by it's founder.

Since many of the LOLs Commishes had recruited players for the 2009 season promising competition in the LOL, Newkie (Commish of Where Eagles Dare) and myself (Commish of 19th Hole at Carmel South) decided to start playing between the two leagues awaiting the restart of of the LOL. The Commish of the LOL went through setback after setback and we decided to invite the other leagues to join us from LOL. Terminators and Newford League joined us and we were off and running.

In 2010 Newford League was unable to continue but we added Super Survivor League, 4th Annual 10 Point League, Bunker Shots, and Rain Delays & Mondays. Competition wise we added the ULC Cup to mimic the FEDEX cup and an additional Bracket Competition.

In 2011 Super Survivor decided not to continue but we added TSR Invitational and Happyshack expanding to 8 leagues. The Pride Cup was added to mimic the Ryder/Presidents Cup formats.

In 2012 an overall ULC Winner Competition was added. The league that has the most points accumulated from all of the competitions will be declared the overall ULC Winner!

In 2013 The ULC added Britain United and 300 is a Good Score to our throng and now the competiton has grown to 10 Leagues!

Below are the rules for the ULC Cup and ULC competitions.

Good luck to everyone this year!

Rules

Each player can only have their points count for ONE league.

Players who play in more than one ULC League will be contacted

and asked which league they want their points to count. After the

first season (that they are contacted), they will automatically be

placed in the league they chose the previous year unless they

contact the commish (tbalfour@yahoo.com or their league commish)

and let him know of a change. If in the event an attempt has been made

to contact a player and they have not responded the commish will

pick the league for them giving the smaller league preference. If in

the event there is no response and the player had a single account the year before

they will be placed in the same league as the prior year.

This will stand unless the player lets the commish know of a change.

(ALL CHANGES MUST COME BEFORE THE START OF THE SEASON).

Players may be added to Leagues in order to fill out the Leagues' roster up to the

beginning of the fifth week's tee off time. After that time player's stats

will not count toward the league's or individual standing.

Overall ULC Championship

Championship to find the League that won the year by adding points
from all the competitions throughout the year.

Points are based on the weight of the competition with:

Overall League Season Comps being most important
League Seasons and Pride Cup being second
Individual Comps being the least valuable.

League Comps:

Best Ball Overall, Total Points, H2H

Overall Season

(4x single segments)

1st      80

2nd     72

3rd      64

4th      56

5th      48

6th      40

7th      32

8th      24

9th     16

10th      8

Segments & Pride Cup:

Segments are less, when combined, to winning the overall championships (1/4 instead of 1/3 league points).

1st      20

2nd     18

3rd      16

4th      14

5th      12

6th      10

7th      8

8th      6

9th      4

10th     2

Individual Comps:

Matchplay I &II, ULC Cup

These should be the least amount of points because more than one player from each league can accumulate points for their League … this could be changed to sweet 16 … Elite 8 … final four … whatever! I picked Elite 8 because of the 8 chances to make points with the other comps.

1st      10

2nd     9

3rd      8

4th      7

5th      6

6th      5

7th      4

8th      3

9th      2

10th     1

9th & 10th place points are still to be decided ... for now it will go to the

two highest (losing) accumulated points from the sweet 16 elimination.

 The Pride Cup

Here is the way the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cups are set up:

Ryder Cup:

4 foursomes matches (alternate shot) {For ULC 12 Players per league}

4 fourball matches (best-ball) {For ULC 12 Players per league}

12 singles matches {For ULC 12 Players per league}

Presidents Cup Format:

6 foursomes matches (alternate shot) … {For ULC 6 matches/12 Players per league}

6 fourball matches (best-ball) {For ULC 6 matches/12 Players per league}

12 singles matches {For ULC 12 matches/12 Players per league}

Before we go any further … the use of the words foursomes and fourball will be used to mean each “flight”. In actuality, In a 8 team league, it could be called a “sixteensome” … each team sends out 2 players per flight and plays against the other team's pairs.

The ULC commishes decided to use the use President Cup format so more players can be involved …

Starting 2012 The new format will be:

2 points for each Foursome flight winner: 6 flights X2 = 12 Possible Points

2 points for each Fourball flight winner:    6 flights X2 = 12 Possible Points

1 point for each Singles flight winner:     12 flights X1 = 12 Possible Points

                                                                            Total = 36 Possible Points

* as many as 8 people may participate in more than one segment
* up to 4 of them are allowed to participate in all 3 segments
* managers may choose to use between 24 and 36 different players for the 3 segments
For instance:         Managers may use 36 totally different players for all the segments
Or ... use - 8 players in two segments

                                                  - four of which can go three segments

                                                  - leaving 4 participating in one segment.
Any combination of the above is allowed as long as
... only 8 players are used in 2 or more segments of which 4 players can be used in all 3!

Foursomes (alternate shot): Play runs weeks 6 - 23

Two points per Flight … Twelve points available

Six pairs of teams from each league … 12 players

Each commish will pick the pairings … two players per flight (12 total), how they want to seed them, and who goes first. see example

Ties for the entire Foursomes competition will result in splitting the points divided by the amount of teams tied for first place.

Example of Flight 1 (or the top seeded teams from each league)  (Note this example is set up for a seven leagues using last seasons participants as an example):

BS: Green Machine/golf is a sport???

5th: T-Town Grand Slam/Buckmaster

TSR: Tampa 3 Putts/Hurricane Snipe

WED: Dimpled Balls/Andre Gonzalez Fu Man Chu

RDs: Groton Chipmunks/QCduffers

TER: On Green/Double Edge

19th:  LiveLong&Prosper/18 holes to win

HS: Carl Spackler/Wizzers

For instance: I, as commish of The 19th Hole at Carmel South, pick LiveLong&Prosper and 18 holes to win to be my top teams in foursomes … they play all the #1 seeded teams in the first flight …     LiveLong&Prosper will “hit first” and his point total will count for week 1 (or hole 1). 18 holes to win hits second and his point total will count for week 2 (or hole 2).

There are
Three Eagles and Three Double Bogies awarded to the Three Lowest and Highest Scores for each portion of the competition. In other words, 3/3 for foursomes, 3/3 for fourball, 3/3 for singles. Note: (on the illustration below): QCduffers had one of the three lowest scores and received a double bogie 6 for week 18 and On Green an Eagle (1) for week 17 and Double Eagle an Eagle (2) for Week 12. All Zeros and ties for the lowest score will be counted as a Double Bogie.

Deadlines to submit lineups:

Foursomes: 11:59 PM EST (the night before the start of Week 6)

Fourball: 11:59 PM EST  (the night before the start of Week 12)

Singles: 11:59 PM EST  (the night before the start of Week 18)

If a commish fails to get their starting lineup in by 11:59 PM EST the night before the tourney  … a lineup will be randomly picked for them … I will not be trying to figure out what is best for your league … so for Foursomes … the order will be:

1st flight: 4/22

2nd flight: 12/7

3rd flight: 1/29

4th flight: 27/11

5th flight: 17/9

6th flight: 24/20

A similar random setup will be in place for the Fourball and Singles matches. You will note that this takes away a lot of the commishes' control of their tourney so make sure to get your lineups in on time!!! It will prevent a lot of time and consternation on the part of everyone!

Scoring (by hole):

The “Course” is a par 72 and is used for all three formats

1st & 2nd get birdies

3rd - 8th get pars

 9th & 10th get bogies

(Note: This scoring is for 10 Leagues ... for nine leagues drop one par)

After 18 holes are completed Top 3 scores of all flights get Eagles

Bottom 3 scores of all flights get double bogies

In other words, there will only be 3 eagles and 3 double bogies for the entire foursome competition

(3 each for four-ball & 6 each for singles-double the amount because there is double the available points)

Ties (during the round):

High side goes up

Low side goes down ... (see illustration below)

On the 7th hole  B1 scores 190 ... C1 &  E1 both have 176s since the tie is on the low side

there will only be one birdie this hole and one extra par ...

On the 13th hole D1 &  E1 are tied at 185 and B1 has the low score of 184 ... in this example there would be one less bogie and one more par.

Fourball (best-ball): Play runs weeks 12 - 29

Two points per Flight … Twelve points available

Six pairs of teams from each league … 12 players must be different players than Foursomes

Each manager picks the pairings (x6), how they want to seed them

Best Score each Week is used for the team's score

Ties for the entire Fourball competition will result in splitting the points divided by the amount of Flights tied.

Singles: Play runs weeks 18 – 35

One point per Flight …12 points available

Ties for the entire Singles competition will result in splitting the points divided by the amount of Flights tied. NOTE: The Drogs and Drunk Irish Duffer tied in the Flight 1 of the Singles Competition at -4. They each get 1/2 point. Cal Birdies in Flight 2 wins their flight outright so they get 1 point

Minimum Amount of Players:

Each League must have a minimum of 24 players to compete for the Pride Cup. Each League will have until Week 6 to meet this requirement. If a league does not have the minimum they will take a Zero for that leg of the competition.

Special Circumstances (Dropouts/No shows): From time to time a player will stop playing for one reason or another. Each Commish has the option to replace 3 players during the competition. They can substitute any number of players in any one "leg" or spread them out throughout ... not to exceed 3 all told! Each substitution will commence before the upcoming weeks first round tee off (after I am made aware of it). Only the commish of that league can OK replacement players and no substitution will be made until the commish contacts the management of the ULC. The management will not try to figure out the viability of a player or the Commishes wishes. Replacement will not be retroactive for any reason.

The ULC Cup

(Individual/1 competition)
Competition starts week one
Top 20 score each week get points

#1 100

#2 95

#3 90

#4 85

#5 80 and so on

**Points for ties are figured out just like the money amounts for winners of tournaments in real life …

          For instance: … 4 people tie for 2nd … Take the points for 2nd (95), 3rd (90), 4th (85), & 5th (80) add them and divide by

four giving each 87.5 points. The next position after the four who tie would be 6th or 75 pts.

**End Game starts at the conclusion of Week 32

**Top 80 ULC Cup Point qualify

**Slates are wiped clean

**Awarded Starting Points for their seed

Top seed starts with 100 points – 80th seed 1.25 points

**Team awarded points after each leg of the tourney.

These will change as the Tourney progresses:

Week 33:  80 Players 1.25 Points per position Top seed-100 points/80th seed-1.25 points

Week 34:  60 Players 1.67 Points per position Top seed-100 points/60th seed-1.67 points

           Week 35:  40 Players 2.5 Points per position Top seed-100 points/40th seed-2.5 points

           Week 36:  20 Players 5 Points per position Top seed-100 points/20th seed-5 points

The higher the seed the better chance of winning but there is still a good chance for a dark horse to come from the bottom & win.

Each week twenty are eliminated leaving the final match to the top twenty.

 Total Points Championship

4 competitions: Winter, Spring, Summer, Season (Weeks 1-36)

Overall Points ... By League                                                                                                                                                                 Top Twenty OVERALL Scores used

NOTE: After each segment (winter, spring, & summer) the scores are reset and and begin anew. Since the Season scores are the top twenty and each of the segments start anew ... winter + spring + summer scores WILL NOT = Season scores because they make up a different set of players.

 Best Ball

4 competitions: Winter, Spring, Summer, Season (Weeks 1-36)

One top scorer represents their league every week

 H2H

4 competitions: Winter, Spring, Summer, Season (Weeks 1-36 ... (equally divisible by 9 ... Each League Plays the other Leagues 4 times)

Top 10 league weekly scores  ...

For instance ... Week 1: League A plays League B/League C plays League D/League E plays League F/League G has a Bye ... the top ten weekly scores of each league are used ... Leagues get a Win Loss or Tie.

NOTE: Week 36 (and 37 if necessary) will be used for tie breakers for the overall standings.

 Matchplay Championships

(Individual/2 competitions) with top 64 being seeded (using the year to date scores of the ULC).
By having 2 championships this will afford more individuals to get into the competition.

#1 plays #64 … #2 plays #63 … #3 plays #62, etc.

**First 4 weeks used to seed players for the first Matchplay Tourney

**Each match is 3 weeks … top three week total moves on.

**First matchplay runs from week 5-22 … week 23 will serve as a final match tiebreaker

**Second matchplay from week 17-34 … week 35 will serve as a final match tiebreaker

**Tie breakers for all rounds will be a 4th week, 5th week, and so on ... unless there are no weeks left (i.e. 36 of 36 weeks). Then it will be top 3rd round total (final week) … top 2nd round total and so on. The 4th round score (or more) will also be used for the first week (or more) of the next round.

Other General Rules

*A four week grace period is afforded to all leagues in which they can continue to recruit new members. It is up to the League commishes to contact the ULC commish with the names of all additions in order that scoring will continue to be correct. All teams must be added prior to the start time of week 5. If a new member is added after that time their scores will be automatically disregarded and are not allowed to participate or represent their league in any of the competitions.

*Players often like to change their player names. If you feel the need to do this please contact your League commish or ULC commish before you do this. This will allow the ULC to make sure all stats are correct and awarded to the correct person. In the event a player repeatedly disregards this rule, their results will be disregarded and will no longer be eligible to represent their league or themselves in any of the competitions. In the event you are playing in an additional elimination league that requires you to add an "*" to your player ... Please add it to the end ... not the beginning of your name (example: The Big Duffer* NOT *The Big Duffer*).

The program that allows us to retrieve and add up scores we use (Excel) is set up alphabetically. An asterisk or any other symbol added to the front of a players name changes the alphabetical order and makes for additional work. Thank You in advance for adhering to this ... You'll make data collection much quicker.
